Luke is now a first grader! Friday was his last day of Kindergarten. It was a short day, and all the parents and family members were invited to come to the school at 9. Graduation started with all the kindergarteners singing a song about going into first grade. Then we went to the classroom for diplomas. Every kid in Luke's class had picked a title to include on their diplomas. Lots of kids picked things like volcador (dump), bonito/bonita (pretty), unicornio (unicorn), but Luke picked "escribe", meaning writer. Apparently he's so proud of the fact that he can write now that he wants his nickname to be writer. After diplomas, we picked up his papers, had a little potluck, and Luke was officially a first grader! He was pretty happy about it, based on how much he ran around afterwards. Right after, Marinda and Luke went to get brunch with other kids from his class. Marinda was "that mom" that got her kids not one, but two orders of French Toast and a side of bacon instead of fruit. But hey, you only graduate from kindergarten once! That night we went out for Molly Moon's to celebrate, and Luke tried something besides chocolate or vanilla - cookie dough ice cream! Clearly his tastes are becoming more refined now that he's not just a kindergartener.

Luke's birthday started around 5 when he woke up. Luke kept going back and forth on whether he wanted to have breakfast in bed or come out to the dining room and have everyone sing to him. He ultimately decided to have breakfast in bed, which is great because no one besides Amit and Jacy were awake and ready to sing to him! He got french toast and bacon, just like he had had the day before.
| Luke was eating his breakfast silly so Jacy had to do the same thing |
After breakfast he and Jacy played for a bit, and then they both decorated their bikes with some bike stickers. We found these while we were going through boxes and it turns out that when Luke got his bike, they gave us stickers to decorate it with.

The next thing on Luke's agenda was a jogging bike ride. The other day he had seen a mom jogging while her kid was riding his bike behind her, and he decided he wanted to do that. So Amit and Luke went jogging/bike-riding, and had a great time doing it.
The next big thing was Luke's birthday party. The theme for this year was First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter. Not just a Star Wars birthday, not just a TIE Fighter birthday, but this specific kind of IE fighter. We had 7 of Luke's friends and one of Jacy's friends over, so in total we had 10 kids running around our house for two hours. It was a little crazy but everything turned out okay! We started with the animal game as people were showing up (everyone had an animal card on their forehead that other people could see, and you ask everyone else questions to figure out what animal you have). Then we did the craft - decorating TIE fighters. Marinda's parents were kind enough to put together the TIE fighters beforehand and even do some last minute shopping for star stickers.
Next was the obstacle course. Amit had spent a couple hours taking random junk from our garage and putting together a TIE fighter obstacle course for the kids. They had to crawl under tables (Death Star canyon from Episode IV), jump over stuff with a lightsaber (Jedi training), navigate a space a space battle, do some frog jumps (because, why not?), avoid asteroids/balls being thrown at them (like the asteroid belt in Episode V), and finish with a jump from a box onto the trampoline. The kids went around a few times and then things devolved into running around and playing soccer, so we knew it was time to line everyone up and get to the back for cake.

Luke had asked for a TIE Fighter cake, and Marinda had been looking forward to this for weeks. She had it figured out - a spherical cake would be the middle part, and the wings would be rice krispie treats. To get the colors, she had spray paint frosting. To make sure she got everything right, she evne bought a model First Order TIE Fighter. The cake took hours of work, starting the night before to get the actual cake made, and ending the day of with putting everything together. And the result was a cake, that actually looked like a TIE Fighter! It's a little lopsided but this was pretty impressive for a first attempt. Unfortunately, the cake did not last long in TIE fighter shape. It collapsed under it's own weight. But you know what? None of the kids cared. At first when he saw it, Luke asked "where's the TIE fighter?" but once all his friends were excited about, you know, EATING CAKE, he was fine. The cake tasted great, and that's all 6 year olds really care about.
After cake, we figured we had survived another birthday party. We checked our watches and it had been...one hour and fifteen minutes. All our plans had lasted only an hour and fifteen minutes! We still had 45 minutes with 10 kids! They played on the playset for a bit, but 10 kids was a bit much, so we sent some of the kids out front to play soccer. The rest of the time the kids entertained themselves inside and outside. For dinner we went out Red Robin, like we always do for kids' birthdays. Luke got ice cream (and so did Jacy) and had them sing happy birthday to him!

Lastly, on Sunday, Marinda woke up from her nap thinking her water broke again. Right after it happened she felt cramps and contractions, so we rushed off to the hospital thinking this was it. We got there, and Marinda had a miserable experience at the hospital. She was in a lot of pain, but that by itself wouldn't have been so bad. It started out okay. We were put in triage, and her nurses' names were Stephanie and Janet, which we thought was a sign since Stephanie and Jeanette are the names of two of Marinda's best friends. Then the nurse shift changed and we a got a new nurse and the test results for water breakage came in - it turns out her water hadn't broken, or at least not enough to have it be all of her water. Contractions were coming and going, but not with enough frequency, and she was dilated to 3 cm. The intensity was there though since she couldn't walk, talk or really breath through them. The nurse and the doctor were pretty condescending and didn't seem to be listening, which was really stressful for both of us. But obviously especially stressful for Marinda, who was in early labor and getting talked down to. We stayed for another couple hours to see if things changed, and while there were more contractions that were intense enough, but it wasn't frequent enough for the 5-1-1 rule. We decided we could go home, which was okay, but the next doctor was even worse than the first one. She had the nerve to demonstrate what it looks like to have an active labor contraction to someone who was on her third pregnancy! Never mind that we don't want to be at home when active labor starts - we did that with Jacy and she was out before Marinda could get an epidural for active labor and transition. We can look back on this now and realize how ridiculous these people were being, but at the time it was pretty amazing how awful this was.
Anyways, so no Asher as of yet, but we're getting close!
Other stories:
•On the playground at school, they play the "I like to move it move it" song to get the kids back inside. Luke really likes the song and has this amazing dance to go with it, even though his friends don't like dancing with him. Keep on being unique Luke!
•The other day Jacy feel asleep with a pretend juice box and pretend cup (it's actually a pretend pepper shaker, but whatever). Marinda commented that someone had fallen asleep after having a little bit too much to drink!
•We were telling Jacy about the importance of staying hydrated. We asked her if she could say 'hydrate', and she responded "Hydrate is too big of a word for me to say"
•Luke really misses his teacher Senor Lizano and is sad that he won't see him all summer. To help him feel better we bought a stuffed kitty cat for Luke (the same kind Luke gave to Senor Lizano for his end of the year present). And what's the cat's name? Senor Lizano! So now Luke can remember him.
