Green eggs and portal guns

Happy Dr. Seuss week! In Luke's class they celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by having wacky dress-up days. Monday was crazy hat day so Luke wore his R2-D2 hat from Disneyland. Tuesday was crazy sock day so Luke wore socks that didn't match. I know, crazy! Wednesday was wacky clothes day but he didn't want to do it. Thursday was dress up as what you want to be when you grow up and he dressed up as a scientist. Friday was mustache day but we didn't have one...so he didn't dress up. They also read lots of Dr. Seuss books in school. At home, we celebrated one morning by eating actual green eggs and oatmeal (we didn't have ham, and even if we did how would we make the entire thing green?). Luke at them, but Jacy said "I don't want to eat them." And no, she was not being ironic.

The other big thing this week is Portal, as in the video game from ten years ago. We decided to let Luke try playing it, and he is hooked. He is still learning how to do everything, but we're glad he's in to a game that involves problem solving and not killing (too many) bad guys. And you should see his face every time he figures something new out - this is him after his first time succesfully shooting a portal while falling so he could make himself fly over a barrier.
This is the face of someone who has just done hard things!

By the way, our La Nina winter continued on Monday when we had a half snow day. Jacy's school was canceled, but Luke had school. Our street was pretty icy and snowy by Seattle standards. This is what our bricks in front of our house looked like around the time Luke was on the bus.

Other than that, things have been pretty normal, which is kind of refreshing given how crazy things have been with Marinda's pregnancy. Today we decided to take Luke to the mountains because he kept asking us if we could go to the mountains we can see from our driveway (the Cascades). We had a bit of an adventure, since we were planning on going up to the summit or near there but then there was an accident so all of 90-east was closed. So we, for the first time ever, turned around on the highway and went the opposite direction to find the short path to get to 90-W. We then tried each exit to see if there was anywhere we could get out so Luke could "climb up the mountains" but that wasn't working. So we ended up going to Rattlesnake Lake, which isn't quite what he wanted but he didn't seem to mind. He was very interested in understanding where the streams were going and how they got to the lake. Towards the end he found some ice to smash, which is always a treat. Jacy decided she was unable to walk, so Amit carried her for the entire hike, until she wanted to smash the ice too.

Luke and Jacy stories:
•All last week Jacy would ask us "Mommy (or daddy)? When will I go back to school? I have a Paw Patrol birthday cake?" We kept telling her Monday, but then school was cancelled! She handled it okay though. Marinda taking her to Wiggle Works probably helped. Also, we think she somehow associated going back to school with her birthday, but thankfully she wasn't too disappointed when we told her she'd have to wait.
•Jacy loves gymnastics! It's one of the few things she consistently wants to go to every week. This week she got to do some cool tricks on the air track!

•Luke made Amit a surprise this weekend completely out of the blue! Well, he said he needed to make it Friday night but it was bedtime, then he forgot about it Saturday morning until Amit asked about it, but then he made this amazingly sweet present. He said it represents Amit and Luke on a daddy-Luke date in his room playing.
•We had another successful (although stressful) baking adventure today. We made a chocolate marble cake with chocolate frosting. Luke helped with pouring, cracking eggs (for the first time ever!), stirring, mixing, and even the S-swirls to make the marbling. Jacy was only allowed to watch, except for getting to mix a bit.
