So we're going to start with the one thing that happened this week that is actually of family history noteworthiness.
On Tuesday Marinda was at the park with Luke, just killing time before they needed to head over to Seattle for her weekly OB appointment. Luke was having a blast running around, and Marinda was doing pretty ok slowly waddling after him. Then all the sudden she stepped in a hole in the sidewalk where a chunk was missing and down she went. She managed to land on her right palm, knee and leg, turning herself midfall to protect her baby, but because of simple physics concepts (angular momentum specifically) her belly still got jerked pretty badly.
So there she was, on the ground, grimacing, holding her belly (which was hurting pretty badly) with Luke running off. She tried to tell him to come over and sit on the ground with her, but he decided that the playground looked a lot more fun. After five or ten minutes the pain started going down, and Marinda started looking around for someone to help her up. There were about ten other parent/child couples on the playground too, and Marinda thought it was weird that no one had come up to her to ask if she was ok. Now she was trying to make eye contact with someone to help her up, but everyone was purposefully looking away, like she had done something wrong or something. She eventually got up, but it was a really disconcerting experience to be in need of help, obviously showing, and to be surrounded by people determined to ignore her.
She rounded up Luke, and since things looked ok (nothing coming out of her, she could feel the baby moving, her ankle was ok by some miracle) and since she was heading there anyways she went to her OB appointment. They checked her out and baby's heartbeat was ok and her cervix wasn't broken or anything (she's dialated to a 3 by the way, wooo!) they weren't that worried, but still wanted her to go over to labor and delivery to be monitored for a couple of hours. So Marinda dropped Luke off at a friend's house, and headed over, calling Amit to let him know what was up but to assure him that he could finish his work day before heading over to be with her.
So they got her all set up in one of the nice monitoring rooms (note: we never saw this room with Luke because they were so busy that night they shoved us in an overflow area with two other mom's) and Marinda was just getting to know her nurse when BAM! Contraction!
Yeah, it hurt, but not as much as how Marinda felt. She was worried, and she showed it by being very ticked off. Not towards anyone in particular, but this wasn't what was supposed to happen. Then another one happened, and another and another. She called Amit and told him to come over now.
Amit got there, and Marinda's stress levels went down, but she had about two solid hours of contractions that were 3 minutes apart. Obviously they slowed down and things were ok (otherwise this blog post would have been titled "Baby Jacy!") but going through that dry run of labor was pretty intense at least emotionally for Marinda.
The doctors came in and told her that because of her little contraction episode they were going to keep her over night, but since things had slowed down a ton Amit went and got Luke to take him home. And other than a couple of times waking up feeling like the arm she fell on was being eaten by rats (why does the body take 12 hours to kick in pain?) Marinda had the best night's sleep she's had in months. "Think about it," she told the Heb when she was interviewed, "I had an adjustable bed, a zillion pillows, and a nurse who's job included helping me get as comfortable as possible!" Plus, no toddler's wandering into the bedroom in the middle of the night. :) When she told the doctors this in the morning, the attending OB said "well, we're glad you enjoyed your stay at Spa UW."
She went home around noon the next day, and only had a couple more contractions since then. She was also put on partial bed rest until her follow up appointment on Friday. This is where we rant about how loved we are in our new ward.
This week Luke started going over to a friend's house in the ward twice a week in the mornings (like a part-time nanny) and she watched him the morning Marinda was still in the hospital. From there the Elder's Quorum Pres. and the Relief Socitey Pres. found out and interrogated Marinda on what they could do for her. So someone came and got Luke the next day for playgroup (while Marinda watched A&E Pride and Prejudice), watched Luke during Marinda's follow up appointment on Friday, and brought us dinner 2.5 nights in a row so Marinda didn't have to cook. We didn't even know one of the people who volunteered to bring us dinner! Then on Saturday we went grocery shopping and when we came back someone from the ward was mowing our lawn! We're kind of really overwhelmed by everything that has been done for us and are so grateful for the good people now in our lives.
The follow up appointment on Friday went great. They hooked her up to the monitors again and Jacy is a star kick boxer. So now Marinda is off bed rest and can go about her normal, super tired schedule. :) No, she is actually doing a ton better and feeling the best she has felt all pregnancy (minus the whole rib kicking thing).
Other stuff this week. Durandal (you know, our rabbit that we used to talk about all the time before Luke was born?) had a rough week. Last weekend we noticed his head was tilting off to the side, but his vet back in Seattle wasn't going to be in until Tuesday, so we were waiting to see what would happen. Well, Monday we came out and he was lying down in his cage (always a bad sign) but it turned out he was still alive, just tilted so much that he couldn't stand up straight. We called a vet over here and got him in for a drop off appointment. Long story short, he had to stay the night because they couldn't get an x-ray done that day from over-booking, but the next morning confirmed what the doctor thought. He had an ear infection - that would require meds twice a day for a month. Not that we're complaining, we were so worried that it was something serious and that we would be saying good-bye, so this is good news! It is just that we're about to have a baby, and he totally did this LAST time too! For those of you who forgot, Durandal got cancer RIGHT before Luke was born and we had to do intense meds and hand feeding while taking care of a newborn too. This is easier and less stressful than that, but it is still kind of ridiculous that it is happening all over again RIGHT before Jacy is going to be born!
Saturday was busy with a trip to Ikea to get a guest bed for our guest bedroom (because we have a guest bedroom - just in case you missed that), and we're guessing that if walking through that maze didn't send Marinda into labor then she must have a few weeks left in her. Then that night we went over to a new friend in the ward's house for a Pi Day party! There were all sorts of pie (Shepard's, pizza, chicken pot, apple, peach) and Marinda brought her instant-friend-winning cherry cheesecake pie. You know, the one she always makes because it is just that good? We had a good time getting to know people better, but could only stay for an hour as Marinda had to head over to Seattle for her BABY SHOWER!
YUP! Marinda's friends informed her before she moved away that though she was technically not in the ward any more that she was still expected to show up for the shower they were throwing her. Yeah, Marinda has good friends. :) Anyways, Marinda woke up Saturday morning feeling like it was Christmas, not because of the party but because she was going to see all her friends. And because of the party... she likes parties. :) Her friends Ashley, Kate and Kamie had thrown it for her, and had decorated the community center so cute in pink poof balls and an adorable "Sugar and Spice" theme with baggies of cinnamon sugar for party favors (note: Marinda puts this stuff on EVERYTHING). They also had cheesecake and cookies and sour patch kids and (get this) NERD ROPES! For those of you who have been following our blog you know how Marinda has been inhaling those, so it was so sweet/funny of her friends to serve them!
It was a low-key shower, where we all just sat around a table and ate food while chatting and making cute little hair bows and headbands for a her baby. Another crazy note, Marinda had done this at a shower years ago and thought how cool it was, but didn't want to mention it to her friends because she was nervous about how much work it might have been (yeah, we know she's silly sometimes). So you can imagine how cool it was that this was the activity Marinda's friends thought to do without her even saying anything! It was a perfect night, complete with presents involving cute books, cuter clothes and a delightful amount of chocolate. :D Ok Jacy, Mommy's had her baby shower. You can come now.
To finish off our week, Amit spoke in church today. Marinda was joking with him that he took her to Ikea yesterday hoping to start up labor so he wouldn't have to speak, but no such luck. :) The topic was to pick your favorite prophet and some teachings that are important to you. Amit had trouble picking a favorite prophet, because that's kind of like asking what your favorite food is - there are so many good options! Amit eventually decided on Joseph Smith, then re-wrote his talk for Wilford Woodruff, debated just doing President Monson, and then ultimately picked Joseph Smith sometime Saturday evening. The main point of his talk was that three truths of the Restoration (which were revealed by Joseph Smith) were important to his conversion and pretty unique to the church. These three are: that God answers prayers, the redemption of the dead, and the nature of eternal life. The talk went really well, and during church at least a dozen people came up to him and told him how much they loved his talk! And instead of just saying "great talk!" they actually went on and on about how much they liked it. The Bishop's wife even said that he should speak to new members and investigators every month (we think she was joking). And the cherry on top of the cookies and cream with hot fudge sundae is that Luke was actually really good during his talk. He just did his elephant alphabet puzzle quietly in the pew. It's a miracle!
