This week Luke bought a toy with his very own money for the very first time! After he turned 3 we started giving him daily jobs that he does to earn a quarter. We started teaching him about working hard to earn money and about saving up to buy something. For his first purchase we thought we'd just take him to the dollar store but he insisted that he wanted to buy a new train car for his wooden train set. So for the past three weeks he's been diligently saving his quarters in his piggy bank and yesterday he finally had enough!
Luke and his 14 quarters!
Luke's first purchase ever!
As part of earning money Luke is also learning about paying tithing. On Monday we took him to the temple to teach him about how tithing money is used by the prophet to buy temples. So now Luke thinks the prophet is buying temples with his quarters, which is at least somewhat true :) This morning he even paid his $0.25 in tithing to the bishop! (Sincere apologies to the ward financial clerk who had to process the tithing payment)
We decided to eat dinner at the Temple too. Luke loves having picnics!
Who's on top of the temple? MORONI!
Luke's face is just hillarious
Our attempt at a family "self-ie"
On Friday we went camping in the exotic wilderness that is our backyard. Luke watched the Daniel Tiger episode on camping and kept saying "I see something scary!" just like they do in the episode. Then we'd have to sing "see what it is, you might feel better." Earlier in the day Marinda took Luke and Jacy to get Luke his very own sleeping bag and flashlight (along with some other camping stuff we needed). He really liked playing with his flashlight to point out the scary things. Sleeping in the tent was a little interesting because Luke apparently hadn't realized that he was supposed to actually sleep in his sleeping bag while in the tent.
Big helper Luke!
Luke picked out his sleeping bag all by himself. He loves being in the tent!
Reading before bedtime
Luke decided he needed to sleep with Amit, for about two minutes. Hint - no matter what their bedtime is, they wont go to sleep until the sun goes down!
Marinda was brave and daring this week. She has been saying for over a year now that when Jacy got to be three months that she would try Hot Yoga. For those of you unfamiliar with this strange and deranged practice, it is doing yoga - in a room where the temperature is 98-105 degrees with a high humidity, sort of like practicing back in India or something. Anyways, it is suppose to help detox your system while loosening your muscles so they can stretch and strengthn better.
"I was really excited and really nervice, and all day it felt like everything was conspirising against me not to go," Marinda said about her experiance. "But I was determined. Then I walked into the studio and was hit with the humidity even out in the foryer." For those of you who don't know this, Marinda has developed claustrophobia during this last pregnancy and has issues with feeling like she can't get enough air - like in a super humid room. "I could feel the panic starting to come, but I held my ground. I was going to do this." The room was even worse. For some reason it had never clicked for Marinda that in order to have a room temperature and humidity controled the way this one was, that would mean no windows or any access to natural light. "I was in full panic mode now - but I forced myself to sit on my mat and close my eyes and just breath, trying to ignore that climatic state my body was entering." Then the class started, and the teacher was so friendly and calming as she walked everyone through a deep breathing excersise - and the panic left. She got through the whole 60 minutes in a state of calm and strength and at the end she was very sweaty and very saticfied. "I couldn't wait until Wednesday for my next class!"
The next day was like a merical. Marinda woke up, and instead of feeling terrible she had so much more energy. She made breakfast and even made Amit's lunch (she never makes his lunch) and was strong and centered all day.
During her Wednesday class Marinda even had a profound realization. "You've heard it said a million times that the past and the future don't actually exist, that only the present moment is real, and during yoga that is hammered into you so much that by the end you can't help but feel more at peace and centered - but then why are the past and future still so important? I'm now trying to think of it as the past and future aren't real because where I'm standing right now isn't actually in either of them, but that they still help determine which way I'm facing. Depending on that a certain type of light shines on me which does exsist in the present moment. In reality I have no future to lose and no past to torment me, because they are simply illusions made up in my mind. But the direction I'm facing based off of those illusions does affect the light I'm receiving into my soul this moment, either good light that will help me to find more peace and growth, or murky darkness that will stagnant."
Yeah, this is a good thing. :)
Funny Luke stories:
- Luke is getting really good at getting Jacy her toys. He's very good at making sure she has one toy to play with. Or two toys. Or all of her toys. We're glad he's taking such an active interest in his baby sister!
Thanks for the toy big brother!
- Amit was talking to Luke during lunch and told him that some people go to work and make sandwiches all day. Luke then stopped eating, looked up at Amit and said "Like Jejebapa!?!"
- During scripture study we pick a word that Luke has to listen for and repeat when he hears it. This week Amit has decided to also include hand motions for some words. The first one we did was 'tremble,' and Luke had a blast trembling!
- After scripture study we always ask "what did we learn today Luke?" So now when he doesn't want to do scripture study he'll start asking "what did we learn today Mommy?" half-way through.
- Luke was singing along with his scout puppy in the car. He loves singing, but he normally won't sing along. Good job Luke!
Luke continuing making his masterpieces!
To beat the heat, Marinda has been taking Luke to the park early in the mornings.
Another artistic little boy photo
- Our church makes these inspirational, short videos called "Mormon Messages" that we watch sometimes. Luke has fallen in love with one called "Bearing Our Burden's With Hope" because it has a dog and a pickup truck in it - and he is a three year old boy. He's watched it about fifty times and Marinda has caught him playing with his dump truck saying "Oh now! The back wheels are slipping!" and then filling it up and them driving it around the house saying "It can go forward because it has a load!" :)
Jacy Updates:
- Jacy's started rolling onto her side! She seems to be really interested in her blue elephant. She is also just playing with her toys more in general.
- She's also grabbing her feet! What a silly girl!
My Elephant!
SEE!!! TOES!!!!!
Check out those eyelashes!
Go Away! My Daddy! I'm not sharing!
As a side note, another Mormon Message video that has particularly touched and been on Marinda's mind lately is one called "You Never Know How Much Good You Do." Just the idea of getting the things done that "need" to get done over the things that we "want" to get done and the sacrifice invovled in that distinction has really touched her heart at this point in her life.
Anyways, enough of the heavy. Have a great week!
