Blue Bear Bhangra

This week we’re blogging from the Denver Airport!  Earlier this week we left Beautiful Bear Lake and headed east to Cleveland with a stopover in Denver for a wedding.
Our last days at the lake were really more of the same.  Kayaking, swimming, and reading were the bottom of our Recreation Pyramid.  But this week we did spice stuff up a little.  On Tuesday we made a trip to the Logan temple and got to hang out with an old family friend of the Mitchell’s, Brian McKenna.  Brian is looking at a future that includes the possibility of going to Iraq, going to the Olympics, and eventually being a guidance counselor at a middle school.  "We're so proud of him!" Marinda said.  "I love living vicariously through my friends and family, so this is just super awesome!"
On Wednesday night we did smores with the family.  It was fun, partially because the the fire was in the shape of a bear, but mostly because of Ben’s face while eating marshmallows.  Most people put one marshmallow over the fire and put it in a graham cracker sandwich with a piece of chocolate.  Ben would put two marshmallows over the fire at a time, and then smash them into his face like a 2-year old eating by himself for the first time.  Remember the marshmallow monster from Ghostbusters?  Ben reminded us of that.

Another thing that happened at the cabin was that Megan (via Steven's ipad) introduced Ben and Marinda to Plants vs. Zombies.  We at the hebdomadal don't really understand the game, but we believe it to be a cover for a zombie infection protocol.  After all, once Ben got hooked he just stared at a screen for a long time and occasionally ate someone's brains.  Figuratively.  A favorite quote from Megan while teaching Ben how to play: "you can't go shopping yet, you don't have a taco!"  We're still waiting on the translators to interpret this gibberish.
Friday we went to Denver for a wedding.  Unfortunately, we were once again not able to make it to the Nauvoo Cafe for pot pies.  But we were able to eat at a sit-down restaurant in the airport.  Our conclusion: sit down restaurants at airports are a waste of time and money.  Why?  We asked amateur financial guru Amit Misra about this policy.  “You sit down, and wait for a long time, and get food that tastes about as good as food from a non-sit down place in an airport.  In short, you pay more and waste more time.”  Our response, in short, is that Amit should go back to doing astroLoGy (hehehehe).
The wedding in Denver was fun.  We got there in time on Friday for the Sangeet.  In olden India, this was the event where the women got together and sang songs (like Songeet.  Not really, but its close.)  Nowadays, its just like a reception, but its before the wedding and the real reception.  There was food, and dancing, and Marinda got compliments on her bhangra.  “She was sooooooo talented!” one auntie said.  “Where did she learn this?  She’s a natural!” another auntie said.  (note: in an unusual move, we have included real quotes)  We at the hebdomadal appreciate this praise but know the sad truth - that once a younger, whiter girl shows up in the family Marinda will be moved out of the spotlight.  Thankfully, even as she ages, only a select 0.1% of the population can even approach being whiter than Marinda.
Yesterday was the wedding and the reception.  Beforehand, we went swimming and hung out at the hotel.  It was really nice looking!  The wedding was beautiful, and wondeful, and a whole slew of other adjectives.  Their groom rode on a chariot led by a horse that could probably take on most small cars.  At one point Marinda walked by the horse to try to get to Amit’s mom.  Or rather, she tried to walk in front of the horse.  As she moved towards him, the horse nearly whacked her with his gigantic head.  Needless to say, Marinda stayed away from animals the rest of the night.  Don’t be surprised if horses become the new rattlesnakes.
The reception was also great.  Some highlights/interesting notes: at the reception, instead of having a traditional guest book, they had a portable photo booth, so you could get pictures taken and then they have pictures printed out on the spot and put into the photobook by your signature.  And they also had props to play with. (pictures forthcoming.  For now, if you want to see them you'll just have to come visit us!)
Another fun note was that the wedding had an open bar.  But the bar was a smoothie bar!  Not being alcohol-drinkers ourselves, we were thrilled.  They had virgin pina coladas and any combination of fruit smoothies.
Today we explored the area around Denver with Amit’s parents.  First we went to Red Rock, which was great.  “What’s there to see here?” said Amit’s dad.  “We saw a red rock, let’s go now.”  In reality, this is what we saw.  This is also home to one of the coolest outdoor amphitheaters in the world.  For those readers interested in how the rocks formed, the short answer is they formed when the Rocky Mountains formed.  The red rocks are a younger rocker that collided with the older rock to the west.

Another...noteworthy....thing we saw was a bear.  Yup, right in downtown Denver.  And it was attacking the conference center!  And it was like, ten times bigger than the average bear!  Imagine how much smarter Yogi the bear is than your average bear, and that's how much bigger this bear is than the average bear.  And it was blue.  And probably metal or plastic.  But it was attacking the city!  OMG!  Take that Fremont troll!

Well, our flights boarding in about 10 minutes, so I guess that will be it for this week.  We hope you weren't 'board' with this post, but we have to 'take off' right now.
