Mary Potter and the Pink Elephant of Azkaban

This week we're blogging in from beautiful Scotts Valley, California!  We're here for a girl's birthday.  Or I guess birthdate, to be exact.  Marinda's eldest sister, Cara, had a baby girl on Friday!  Yay!  She's very....cute...and adorable...and sleepy...and she doesn't necessarily DO a lot, but she...is...something awesome. "She is the best thing ever!" said Marinda, aunt of said new baby.

Marinda flew in Tuesday night after some marathon sessions of harp teaching (3 on Monday).  "You know I was exhausted!  Stop asking me questions for this blog!" she responded when asked for a comment.

Amit's week was pretty boring until heading down to Cali on Thursday.  Work, eating, sleeping, basically everything a baby does but just add in looking at a screen for a long time.  Replace "a screen" with "off into space" and he basically was a newborn for a few days.  Thursday he had the pleasure of riding public transit to the airport, where he saw a lady from another country get kicked off the train for not buying a ticket.  I guess they do actually check.

Thursday night/Friday morning most of the family went to the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 in 3D!  They even had Harry Potter shaped 3D glasses!  "It was great," said Amit, moviegoer and person who looked like he needed a good lightning strike, "how long until I get to go to bed again?"  It appears that someone was hit by a 'stupefy' spell and wasn't able to stay conscious very long.  Tsk, tsk.  They were amused and kept awake by all the "Voldemorts" and "Harry Potters" and "Random British School Girls" running around calling us "Muggles" for not dressing up.  Entertaining as this was, the real pay off came when all of the crazed fans made watching the movie an audience interactive experience with lots of cheering and yelling.  It was awesome, even if it wiped us all out for the next 72 hours.  But the ultimate result that we want you all to come away from this blog was that:

Mary was born on the same day as the premiere of the last Harry Potter movie!

So from now on her name is "Mary Potter."  And Jana, Marinda's younger sister, gave her a cute stuffed pink elephant.  Hence, this blog's title: "Mary Potter and the Pink Elephant of Azkaban."

So that was Friday.  Big day.  Big baby.  9 pounds, 2 oz.  Reactions were varied to the birth of a person.  "No, it didn't freak me out," said Uncle Amit.  "But for some reason I was really glad that I wasn't a female for the majority of the day."  "I - just - don't - know - if - I - can - handle - it!" said one aunt in particular who, like Voldemort, must not be named.  For more adorible pictures, you can visit Mary's website at maryslack.weebly.com .

In other news, Amit and Marinda have had the responsibility of watching after their nephew John (Cara and Fred's 13 month-old son) for much of the time the past couple days.  Some funny stories about John:
-One time Marinda's dad (Grandpa Mitchell) was on his laptop and John came over to play with the laptop (he looooooves electronics).  Grandpa shut the laptop, and John started bawling!  That is, until he was given grandpa's iphone.  Then John was fine again.
-John seems completely uninterested in Mary.  After all, why should he care?  "She doesn't have any buttons that I can press.  She doesn't have a flashy screen that lights up.  I can't even hit her or blow on her to make noise.  Mary is BORING! " John said, through a translator who may or may not be the writer of this blog.
-Amit got to change his first diaper!  He also got the reward for "Kicked fewest times by a baby during changing."  Granted, he was the only contender for this award.
-John is heavy.  "Oh gosh," Marinda continues to say, "my arms were killing me after that first day. And then..." she stopped talking, so I'll tell you what happened.  She got distracted by the baby, that's what happened.  But who can blame her?

And now for the moment we've all been waiting for - our exclusive interview with Mary Potter!
Misra Family Hebdomadal: Mary - you were born on Friday.  What was that like?
Mary: (closes eyes and brings boxing glove mittens to face)  Interpretation - 'such pain can no soul know, except they experience it through their own eyes, their own ears, their own umbilical cords'
MFH: What was it like breathing for the first time
Mary: (yawns) Interpretation: I just don't know, MFH.  With all the pain in the world, I had initially decided to go on a breathing fast until all babies around the world had access to smooth jazz music and Transiberian Orchestra in their rooms.  But then the evil doctors forced me to breath!  This issue must be addressed in the public forum.  Right after I take my nap...
MFH:  How do you feel about all these people wanting to hold you and look at you?
Mary: (starts crying) Interpretation: the joy I feel brings tears to my eyes.  I love my family, especially my Aunty Marinda and my Uncle Amit.  Had they not been here, I know not what would have become of my existence.  I thought about arriving last week, but then I knew I had to wait for them to be here.
MFH: You've been born, brought home and solved hunger for yourself by eating.  What will you do next?
Mary: (spits up stuff) Interpretation: gorge myself until my stomach is literally overflowing with food and spit it up.  Rinse and repeat.  Actually, skip the rinse.

Well, that's probably it for this week.  Remember, if you're feeling Hebdomadal pain, ask your doctor for a prescription for this blog!

Mary Potter with the 3D Harry Potter glasses on!
(don't worry, we waited until she was asleep so she isn't actually looking through them)
